Bees close CCAC Crossover with 3-0 win over Calumet

Jenny Koerner had nine kills to lead St. Ambrose past Calumet St. Joseph 26-24, 25-16, 25-22 on the final day of the first CCAC Crossover in Joliet, Ill., Saturday.

Koerner had just one hitting error and combined with Devan Porter (8 kills, 2 errors) and Riley Hummert (7 kills, 1 error) for a total of 24 kills and just four errors.

In the most competitive set of the match, the Bees trailed 24-21 in the opener. A Calumet serving error was followed by a Hummert kill before a Rachel Dion knotted the set at 24-24. Hummert added another kill and a Crimson Wave hitting error capped the five-point run to give SAU a 1-0 lead.

The Bees were able to open early big leads in the final two sets, although CCSJ made things interesting in the third. The Wave tied the set at 20-20 and trailed just 23-22 before Koerner put down her ninth and final kill, setting up a match point that SAU converted thanks to a Calumet miscue.

Porter did all her damage while playing just the final set.

Breanne Cunningham totaled five kills while Dion and Abby Happ each added four.

Morgan Twing led all players with 23 assists and Sydni Coultrip reached double digits with 17. Emma Marshall picked up 15 digs.

St. Ambrose started the two-day crossover with losses to two of the better teams in the CCAC. St. Francis (Ill.) beat SAU 25-20, 28-26, 25-17 Friday afternoon and Olivet Nazarene defeated the Bees 18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-11 Saturday morning.

After the Saints scored four of the final five points to win the first set of Friday's match, the Bees led throughout much of the second set, including a 20-16 lead late. Kills from Jessica Hemm and Happ erased two set points before SAU earned a set point of its own at 26-25. But USF responded with three straight points to claim the set and closed out the match a set later.

Hummert led the team with nine kills while Hemm and Porter each added six. Twing (13) and Coultrip (10) again reached double figures in assists. Jenna Laxton recorded 20 digs.

The next day, St. Ambrose dominated the first set against Olivet Nazarene before the Tigers jumped out to big leads early in each of the final three sets.

Porter supplied most of the offense, totaling 16 kills against just two hitting errors. Hummert had nine kills while three Bees - Dion, Happ and Hemm - each had four kills.

Twing and Coultrip were credited with 22 and 11 assists, respectively. Hummert (14), Twing (13), Laxton (12) and Marshall (11) had double-digit digs in the loss.

SAU, now 7-13 overall and 3-6 in the conference, will begin the second half of CCAC play at home Tuesday against Saint Xavier. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
