SAU defeats Roosevelt for second straight CCAC win

St. Ambrose picked up its fifth win in its last seven matches as the Bees defeated Roosevelt 25-21, 25-15, 26-24 Tuesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

The win, SAU's second straight conference victory, moved the team to 6-11 overall and 2-4 in the CCAC.

It was an 8-2 run midway through the opening set that got the Bees rolling.

Leading 13-12, an Abby Happ kill started the spurt. Riley Hummert added two kills, Sydni Coultrip had an ace and Jessica Hemm and Madisyn Johnson teamed for a block to ultimately extend the lead to 21-14. Roosevelt (1-15, 1-5 CCAC) closed to within 23-21 before a block from Breanne Cunningham and a Happ kill gave SAU the set.

The serving of Devan Porter helped St. Ambrose to a fast start in the second set. After the Lakers won the first point, the Bees won the next six behind two Porter aces and a Hummert kill. SAU was not seriously threatened from there in taking a 2-0 lead.

Roosevelt led by as many as four points at 13-9 in the third set. The Lakers maintained a lead throughout much of the set, and led as late as 23-21. After a Bee timeout, back-to-back errors allowed St. Ambrose to climb into a 23-23 tie. Hummert fought off a set point with her eighth kill of the night. A Cunningham block gave the Bees a match point, and that was all they'd need as a Rachel Dion ace closed out the three-set victory.

In her Bee debut, Porter led the team with 11 kills, 10 digs and three aces. Behind Hummert's eight kills, Happ added six.

Morgan Twing and Coultrip paced the team with 19 and 13 assists, respectively. Jenna Laxton shared team-high honors with 10 digs.

The Bees hope their hot streak carries into the weekend as the team faces three conference matches as part of the first CCAC Crossover of the year. St. Ambrose will face host St. Francis (Ill.) Friday before battling Olivet Nazarene and Calumet St. Joseph Saturday.
