SAU gets pair of five-set wins to close IWU Invitational

St. Ambrose closed the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational by battling for a pair of five-set victories in Marion, Ind., over the weekend.

SAU defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 17-25, 15-8 Friday afternoon before taking down Huntington 14-25, 25-13, 19-25, 25-21, 15-10 in the team's only match of the day Saturday. The Bees opened the two-day event with a 25-15, 26-24, 25-19 loss to host Indiana Wesleyan Friday afternoon.

SAU, now 5-11 overall, opened a 2-0 lead over Cumberland before being extended to a decisive fifth set.

With the set tied at 5-5, a Rachel Dion kill was followed by a Riley Hummert kill to give St. Ambrose a lead it would not relinquish. Hummert picked up three more of her match-high 17 kills from there as the Bees broke open a 10-8 lead by winning the final five points of the match.

Abby Happ was a second Bee to reach double digits in kills, finishing with 12. Jenny Koerner finished with nine kills and Breanne Cunningham and Dion each totaled seven.

Morgan Twing led all players with 30 assists while teammate Sydni Coultrip handed out 21. Jenna Laxton (21) and Emma Marshall (11) led the team in digs.

The next day, St. Ambrose had to rally from a 2-1 deficit against Huntington.

Leading just 22-21 in the fourth, the Bees took advantage of a Huntington hitting error for a two-point advantage. Hummert added a kill and Dion extended the match with an ace.

In the fifth, consecutive kills from Happ were followed by a Coultrip ace to break a 4-4 tie and give SAU a 7-4 lead. With the margin just a single point at 7-6, kills from Madisyn Johnson and Hummert highlighted another three-point run to give St. Ambrose some breathing room at 10-6. Hummert had three more kills and Dion a big ace down the stretch to seal the win.

Happ and Hummert were the only two players to record double figures in kills, finishing with 19 and 13, respectively. Hummert also came up with 13 digs. Dion and Johnson each had six kills.

Twing again led the team with 29 assists as Coultrip was credited with 16. Twing also led the team with 14 digs. Coultrip had five of the team's 12 total aces.

In the Bees' only loss of the weekend, Happ led the way with 10 kills against Indiana Wesleyan. Hummert had eight kills and Dion added five. Twing (16) and Coultrip (12) collected 28 of the team's 30 assists. Hummert picked up 10 digs while Laxton recorded nine.

St. Ambrose next returns to CCAC play Tuesday when the Bees host Roosevelt inside Lee Lohman Arena at 7 p.m.
