St. Ambrose sweeps Robert Morris for first CCAC win

St. Ambrose picked up its first conference victory in impressive fashion Tuesday night. The Bees swept Robert Morris 25-20, 25-5, 25-21 to move to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the CCAC.

SAU dominated across the board, with most of the damage coming in that second set.

The Bees finished with 46 total kills, picking up at least 14 in each set, while the Eagles collected just 12 total kills, and twice finished a set with more hitting errors than kills. SAU had a .274 hitting percentage while RMU hit at a .012 clip. The Bees also had nine service aces - three each from Riley Hummert and Sydni Coultrip and two from Abby Happ - and Robert Morris had just one.

St. Ambrose actually overcame a 20-19 deficit in the opening set. Breanne Cunningham had back-to-back kills to put the Bees in front. She then teamed for two blocks - one with Hummert, the other with London Williams - and Hummert put down a pair of kills as SAU closed the set on a 6-0 run.

The roll continued into the second.

After spotting the Eagles a 1-0 lead, the Bees won 11 straight points. Happ had four kills and Hummert added two kills and two aces during the run.

Happ had seven of her match-high 12 kills during the second set. As a team, SAU had 14 kills against just two hitting errors for a .480 hitting percentage in the set. RMU had just one kill and a pair of hitting errors in the second.

The third set was tight throughout with Robert Morris (7-10, 1-4 CCAC) leading as late as 20-17. Jenny Koerner recorded two kills and Morgan Twing had an ace as part of a six-point run that put the Bees in front 23-20. Kills from Rachel Dion and Allie Brent closed out the victory.

Hummert was second to Happ with nine kills. Koerner finished with five and Cunningham, Jessica Hemm and Madisyn Johnson each added four.

Twing and Coultrip led all players with 23 and 19 assists, respectively. Jenna Laxton picked up a match-best 20 digs, Hummert added 15 and Emma Marshall finished with nine.

St. Ambrose will next take a break from conference play by competing in the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational Friday and Saturday.
