SAU defeats Hannibal-LaGrange at HLG Triangular

St. Ambrose overcame a 22-19 deficit in the first set on its way to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-12 win at Hannibal-LaGrange in a triangular in Hannibal, Mo., Saturday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, the Bees fell to No. 1 Park 25-23, 25-13, 25-13.

Trailing by three points late in the opening set against the host Trojans, back-to-back kills from Abby Happ were followed by consecutive kills from Jenny Koerner to give SAU a 23-22 advantage. Happ added an ace before the Bees closed out the first set on a Hannibal-LaGrange serving error.

The rally sparked the Bees. St. Ambrose raced to an 11-6 lead in the second set in grabbing a 2-0 lead, and then ran off seven straight points behind the serving of Jenna Laxton for an 8-2 lead early in the third.

Koerner led the way with a match-high 15 kills. Happ recorded 11. Each player had just three hitting errors. Breanne Cunningham collected six kills and Rachel Dion and Allie Brent each added four.

Morgan Twing was credited with 23 assists while Sydni Coultrip had 15. Laxton picked up a match-best 12 digs. Emma Marshall had five.

SAU nearly pulled out the opening set in the match against the top-ranked Pirates. After trailing by as many as five points and still down 22-19, the Bees rallied. Jessica Hemm put down a kill and then teamed with London Williams on a block. Happ followed with an ace to tie the set at 22-22 before a Hemm block gave St. Ambrose a 23-22 lead. But the unbeaten Pirates righted the ship and won the next three points to claim the set.

Park (12-0) never looked back, taking big leads in the next two sets to close out St. Ambrose in three.

Riley Hummert (nine kills) and Happ (eight) were the only two Bees to finish with more than two kills. Twing and Coultrip paced the team in assists with 13 and 11, respectively. Laxton registered 10 digs.

SAU next returns to CCAC play with a match at Trinity International Thursday night.
