Bees get win at season-opening Grace Lancer Classic

Behind 16 kills and 14 digs from Riley Hummert, St. Ambrose took down Lindenwood-Belleville 25-23, 26-24, 25-23 at the season-opening Grace Lancer Classic in Winona Lake, Ind., Friday.

Hummert was the only Bee to reach double digits in kills, but five teammates had at least three each. Jenny Koerner and Abby Happ each had six, Allie Brent put down five, and Hannah Miller and Madisyn Johnson had three apiece.

Morgan Twing collected a match-high 23 assists while Sydni Coultrip passed out 13. Jenna Laxton led all players with 15 digs.

The win came on the heels of a five-set loss to Indiana Kokomo that saw SAU rally from a two-set deficit to only fall 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 15-25, 15-12.

After forcing the fifth set, St. Ambrose led 6-5 on a Coultrip ace before IU Kokomo ran off three straight points to grab a lead they would never relinquish. A Happ kill pulled the Bees to within 13-12 before the Cougars won the final two points to escape with the victory.

Hummert recorded a 16-kill, 15-dig double-double in defeat. Happ recorded 15 kills. Twing (36) and Coultrip (10) led the team in assists while also each totaling 10 digs. Emma Marshall picked up a team-best 18 digs. Laxton registered 16 digs.

Saturday, SAU lost a pair of matches, each in three sets, beginning with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-13 loss to Indiana East.

Koerner had a team-high eight kills against just one hitting error for the Bees. Johnson finished with seven kills. Twing had 20 assists, while Laxton (14) and Hummert (11) reached double digits in digs.

St. Ambrose closed the two-day event with a 25-20, 27-25, 25-22 loss to host Grace.

Hummert recorded her third double-double in four matches with 17 kills and 14 digs. Brent recorded eight kills. Twing had 36 assists and Laxton finished with 13 digs in the loss.

SAU will next visit Mount Mercy Tuesday.
