Men second, women fourth at CCAC Indoor Championships
Dylan Grandon was named both the Men's MVP and the Men's Track Athlete of the Championships and Beth Jansen was tabbed as the conference's Men's Assistant Coach of the Year at the CCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Grandon won both the 600-meter and 1000-meter runs and was part of SAU's winning 4x400-meter relay team. He earned the MVP award for accumulating the most points in the meet and was selected as the Athlete of the Championships given to the athlete with the best performance.
Jansen, in her 17th year as an assistant track & field coach at St. Ambrose, saw her distance runners pile up several points to help the SAU men finish second at the Championships.
It was part of a big day for the Bees, who set three Championship event records.
The men's 4x800m relay team of Charles Huesmann, Ben Wilson, Alex Fuller and Grandon won a conference title in a time of 3:20.02. That broke the previous meet record of 3:21.26 set by Olivet Nazarene last year.
The Bees broke two records in events as part of the heptathlon. Dominic Neely's time of 7.28 seconds in the 60m dash bettered the previous record of 7.30 seconds set by ONU's Jonathan Thomas in 2023. That came as part of a first-place finish for Neely in the heptathlon. And Logan LeFils' shot put effort of 14.51 meters shattered the old record of 11.35 meters, last set in 2022.
Along with Grandon's two event titles, Neely's win in the heptathlon and the success of the 4x800m relay team, St. Ambrose won three other conference events.
Ben Wilson won the 400m dash in 49.92 seconds. Jonah Wilson claimed the conference crown in the shot put with a mark of 15.77 meters. Joshua Mottet's jump of 4.50 meters won the pole vault.
SAU saw several individuals earn top-three finishes to garner all-conference recognition.
Luke Benes finished second in both the 3000m run and the 5000m run. Leavell Windfield also had two runner-up finishes, those coming in the long jump and triple jump. Chris Miserendino and Tommy Ashby finished second-third, respectively, in the 800m run, and Miserendino added a third-place effort in the 1000m run. Will Dowda earned silver in the mile run. Trae Corby (600m run), Joe Reinhart (shot put) and Anthony Conard (heptathlon) had third-place showings. The men's 4x800m relay of Ashby, Tyler Moody, Nathan Boleyn and Kale Cartee took second.
For the women, Kaitlyn Knoche placed third in the mile run and Trenyce Bonner was third in the high jump to win all-CCAC honors.
Olivet Nazarene won both the men's and women's titles. The Tiger men finished with 258 points to edge SAU with 209. Saint Xavier (117.5), St. Francis and Viterbo rounded out the top five. The ONU women totaled 279 points. Viterbo (166), Saint Xavier (102), St. Ambrose (69) and St. Francis finished second through fifth, respectively.
The Bees will host the SAU Tune Up next Saturday before competing at the NAIA Indoor Championships in Gainesville, Fla., beginning Feb. 27.
