
Season ends in CCAC Tournament semifinals
St. Ambrose saw its season come to an end with a competitive 4-2 loss to Olivet Nazarene in the semifinal round of the CCAC Tournament in Bourbonnais, Ill., Wednesday.
The Bees lost the doubles point. The team of Jenna Smithmeyer and Paige Owens won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. The top team of Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Hayden Evans lost 6-1 while Julia Turek and Yeva Shershan fell 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to give the Tigers the point.
SAU earned its two team points in singles play.
After pairing for the doubles win, Smithmeyer and Owens each won in singles. Smithmeyer picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 while Owens cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.
The Bees were close in several other matches, including Shershan's 6-4, 7-5 loss at No. 5. Turek lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and Cortez dropped her match 6-0, 7-6 at No. 2. Evans was trailing 7-5, 3-2 at No. 3 when her match was halted after ONU had secured the win.
St. Ambrose finished the year with an 8-10 record.
