Bees rally with late singles wins to defeat Fighting Saints

Trailing 3-2 with the final two singles matches in progress, Jenna Smithmeyer and Yeva Shershan came through for the Bees.

Each player rallied after dropping the first set to pick up dual-clinching victories for St. Ambrose in a 4-3 win at St. Francis Wednesday afternoon.

Smithmeyer, playing at No. 4 singles, lost the opening set 6-1. She came back to claim the second 6-3 before cruising to a 6-0 win in the third set.

Shershan dropped her opener 6-3 before recovering to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

Those two wins along with a 6-1, 6-3 decision from Hayden Evans at No. 3 singles and a forfeit win from Paige Owens at No. 6 were all SAU needed to move to 6-8 overall on the season and 1-1 in CCAC play.

Julia Turek and Chiara Aguirre Cortez fell at the top two singles spots, respectively.

The Bees also lost the doubles point. Cortez and Evans dropped a tight 7-6 (7-5) decision at No. 1 doubles while Owens and Smithmeyer fell at No. 2. The No. 3 team of Turek and Shershan won by forfeit.

St. Ambrose will step out of conference play to visit Grand View Friday.
