SAU gets spring-opening win over Simpson
St. Ambrose got its spring season off to a fast start by rolling past Simpson 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Quad-City Tennis Club in Moline, Ill.
The Bees cruised in singles play, winning five of the six matches.
The tightest match of the dual came at No. 2 singles as SAU's Julia Turek needed a third-set super-tiebreaker in her 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 win.
Three other Bees combined to drop just three total games. Chiara Aguirre Cortez at No. 1 singles and Yeva Shershan at No. 4 won by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores. Hayden Evans was victorious at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0.
Paige Owens claimed a win by default at No. 6 singles. Audrey Pender fell at No. 5 in the only setback for St. Ambrose.
SAU dropped just two games in the two contested doubles matches.
Cortez and Turek won 6-0 at No. 1 doubles and Owens and Jenna Smithmeyer earned a 6-1 win at No. 2. The No. 3 team of Evans and Shershan won by default.
The Bees, now 4-4 on the year, will host Quincy Sunday at the QC Tennis Club.
