Bees drop two duals to wrap up fall schedule
St. Ambrose finished its fall schedule by dropping a pair of duals Sunday in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The Bees lost to Grinnell 7-0 and to Cornell 5-2.
The two SAU victories came in singles action against Cornell.
Chiara Aguirre Cortez needed a third set before winning a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles. Jenna Smithmeyer did not drop a game in cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5.
Paige Owens nearly had a third Bee win, but she fell in a third set 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Maddie Brosnahan dropped a competitive match at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-4.
The No. 2 doubles team of Owens and Smithmeyer and the No. 3 team of Yeva Shershan and Kate Jones each lost by 6-4 scores.
Earlier in the day, the Bees were shut out by Grinnell. The Pioneers won all six singles matches in straight sets and also came out victorious in each of the three doubles matches.
St. Ambrose, now 3-4 overall, will begin conference play with the start of the spring season.
