St. Ambrose drops dual to D-I St. Thomas
St. Ambrose dropped a dual to Division I St. Thomas Friday at the Davenport Central Natatorium. The Bee men narrowly fell 127-114 while the SAU women lost 194-44.
The SAU men won five individual events and both relays. Jonas Friess and Cory Werrett each led the way with a pair of individual golds. Friess won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.41 and then won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.05. Juan Gomez finished fifth and Benny Zarhin was seventh in the 200 free, while Luke Sproule and Sam Gillham took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 500 free.
Werrett won both freestyle sprints, claiming the 50-yard freestyle in 20.95 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 46.86 seconds. Brett Jones (47.93) was runner-up in the 100 free and placed fourth in the 50 free. Riley Stevenson (21.62) came in third in the 50 free and Carter Gaber was fourth in the 100 free.
The other men's champion was Mikhi Hassim whose time of 1:56.42 won the 200-yard individual medley. Jayden Coetzer was fifth.
Coetzer touched the wall second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.67. Gavin Hopewell placed fifth and Egoitz Munoz was seventh. Gomez placed second in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:59.52. Marat Usov (2:00.69) was third and Sproule seventh. Usov also earned a third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:01.71. Gillham was fifth. Luke Thomas claimed third place in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.75. Joseph Blasen was sixth and Walter De Jongh finished seventh.
Lane Otte and Bram Mess finished back-to-back in the diving events. Otte was third in the 1-meter competition with a score of 196.35, just edging Mess, who finished with a 195.80. Mess (127.25) was third in the 3-meter event with Otte taking fourth.
Gaber, Werrett, Hassim and Stevenson won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.35. The team of Jones, Hassim, Stevenson and Friess won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:08.18.
The St. Ambrose women's top efforts were three runner-up finishes. Grace Bobeldyk was second in the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:48.31. Bryn Kiley (18:52.15) was third and Annaliese Bowser took sixth. Leyre Antonanzas was second in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:17.34, while Bobeldyk finished fourth and Emily Henson sixth. The other Bee runner-up was Bridget O'Grady who was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:28.39. Kennedy Capman was fourth and Irene Artabe sixth. Artabe also finished eighth in the 200-yard individual medley.
Antonanzas added a fourth-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle. Bowser was seventh. Anna Gute was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.52 seconds. Kiley was fifth and Ruthie Gemmen took seventh.
Alexis Hill, Sylvia Zipperer and Sarah Priewe took fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle. Sophia Ewanic placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, just ahead of Riley Loeffler (sixth) and Rylie Steinkamp (seventh). Ewanic also took sixth in the women's 1-meter diving with a score of 151.70.
Artabe, O'Grady, Antonanzas and Gute were second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.96. Gute, Ewanic, Bobeldyk and Kiley were third in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:44.49.
The Bees jump right back into the pool Saturday at Quincy University.
