SAU wraps up regular season with 15-13 win over Ottawa

St. Ambrose will head to the postseason on a win after the Bees wrapped up the regular season with a 15-13 home victory over Ottawa (Kan.) Saturday afternoon.

Avery Cummins scored with less than nine minutes remaining to break an 11-11 tie and Allie Ruggiero scored two of her team-high six goals after that to seal the win.

It didn't look like SAU would need those late goals after the Bees opened up a 7-1 lead 13 minutes into the contest. But Ottawa (6-7, 4-2) scored six of the next seven goals to get to within 8-7 before a Maura Healy goal late in the half opened up a 9-7 lead at the half.

Ruggiero scored two goals early in the second half but the Braves continued to chip away and eventually evened the score at 11-11 with just over 11 minutes remaining.

Just over two minutes later, Cummins netted her second goal of the day, which gave St. Ambrose a lead it would hold on to. It was the first of three goals over a 35-second span. Erin Green extended the lead to two goals with her fourth of the game, and seconds later Ruggiero added a goal for a 14-11 lead.

Ottawa closed to within 14-12 before another Ruggiero goal with 4:33 to play sealed the win.

Healy matched Cummins with a pair of goals. Sara Goeddel also scored for the Bees. Green and Healy were each also credited with an assist.

Allison Claus came up with four saves in helping the Bees open up its 9-7 halftime lead and Alexis Schott made eight saves in the second half.

St. Ambrose, now 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference, will next compete in the KCAC Tournament Apr. 25-27 in Leavenworth, Kan.
