St. Ambrose unable to maintain lead in Senior Day defeat

Dominating the first 18 minutes wasn't enough as St. Ambrose squandered a big lead and fell 13-12 to Lindenwood-Belleville Sunday afternoon at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex.

The Bees scored the game's first seven goals and led 8-1 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. But SAU would score just four more goals over the final 42 minutes in falling on Senior Day.

Lindenwood (4-8) closed the gap to 9-6 at the half and tied the contest at 9-9 just over two minutes into the second half.

Katrina Lisowski found McKenna Curzon for a goal to give St. Ambrose a short-lived 10-9 lead. Not even 90 seconds later, the Lynx scored the equalizer, which was the first of four straight goals that gave Lindenwood a 13-10 lead.

Inside the final two minutes, Katie Baranski scored the final of her five goals to cut the margin to a 13-11. Then, with 35 seconds left, Erin Green scored off an Allie Ruggiero assist, to bring the Bees to within a single goal.

Maura Healy won the ensuing draw control, and after a timeout, Baranski had a shot at the tie but the Lynx goalkeeper came up with the save, LU-B's 12th save of the game.

It was a crushing loss after the strong start. Ruggiero and Baranski each scored three goals in the first 12 minutes. Baranski then found Sara Goeddel for a 7-0 lead midway through the opening half. After Lindenwood got on the board, Ruggiero netted her fourth goal of the day for an 8-1 advantage.

Even after the Lynx scored three straight goals to get within 8-4, Baranski scored to up the lead to 9-4 with less than eight minutes remaining in the half. But LU-B scored the final two goals of the half and carried the momentum into the second half.

Alexis Schott was credited with three saves over her 37 minutes in goal before Allison Claus came up with five saves in her time in net.

St. Ambrose, now 6-3 overall, will next host Ottawa on Friday, Apr. 20.
