St. Ambrose suffers first loss of season at Clarke

St. Ambrose battled back from a five-goal second-half deficit to tie the game only to fall 19-16 at Clarke Wednesday afternoon.

The loss snapped the Bees' five-game winning streak to start the year to drop the team to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the KCAC.

Clarke (2-3, 1-1 KCAC) outscored St. Ambrose 5-1 to begin the second half to open up a 14-9 lead. But SAU battled back. McKenna Curzon and Katie Baranski each scored twice and Allie Ruggiero added a goal of her own to help the Bees pull even at 14-14.

The Pride responded with two quick goals of their own to rebuild a two-goal advantage. Another Ruggiero goal, her fourth of the game, cut the deficit to 16-15 with just under 10 minutes remaining. Again Clarke had the answer, scoring two straight to up the margin to 18-15. Curzon netted her third goal of the day to get SAU back to within 18-16 with three minutes left, but the Pride sealed the win with a goal in the final seconds.

Baranski led St. Ambrose with six goals and an assist. Erin Green scored two goals and Maura Healy added one goal and one assist in defeat. Mckenna Palmer, Avery Cummins and Katrina Lisowski also had assists.

Alexis Schott and Allison Claus split time in goal for the Bees.

St. Ambrose will next return home to host Saint Mary Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent's.
