Bees explode for 17 goals in win over Bethel

Jamie Rieger and Allie Ruggiero combined for 11 goals to lead St. Ambrose to a 17-3 win over Bethel (Ind.) Saturday at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex.

The 17 goals are the second-most scored by the Bees in a game this season.

And they all came after a slow start.

Bethel (0-8) scored twice in the game's first three minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Then SAU took over.

First it was Rieger, who netted the first of her six goals on the day. Then Ruggiero scored her first of five to tie the game at 2-2. Erin Green scored the Bees' third goal in just over two minutes to give the team a lead it would never relinquish.

Rieger scored all six of hers before halftime, while Ruggiero tallied four first-half goals. Marie Cristoforo and Claire McCarthy also scored in the opening half as St. Ambrose closed the half with 13 straight goals to lead 13-2 at the break.

Rieger picked up her second assist of the contest, leading to Sara Goeddel's goal that pushed the lead to 14-2 in the opening minutes of the second half.

The Bees let off the gas in the second half. Ruggiero, Green and McKenna Curzon scored to account for the final margin. It marked Curzon's first collegiate goal.

Goeddel also collected an assist in the victory.

Elizabeth Zia was credited with 10 saves, six coming in the first half.

SAU will close the regular season at home Saturday against Marian. The contest at St. Vincent's is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
