St. Ambrose rallies to win second straight CCAC Championship

One just wasn't enough.

A year after winning its first CCAC Women's Golf Championship, St. Ambrose repeated the honor behind three top-five performances. And it will lead to a third straight appearance at the NAIA National Championships.

The Bees rallied from a 14-stroke deficit after Wednesday's opening round to defeat host Olivet Nazarene for the conference crown at Lincolnshire Country Club in Crete, Ill.

A different Bee team took the course Thursday after enduring opening-round struggles.

Anna Hurning led the way.

After shooting a 95 Wednesday, Hurning fired a second-day 8-over 80, the best round of the two-day tournament. Her 175 was good for a share of fourth place, a 13-spot climb up the leaderboard.

That score was matched by Gabrielle Langlois. Langlois started with an 88, the team's only sub-90 round on Wednesday, and followed that with an 87 for her 175 and a spot on the all-tournament team.

Amara Lytle also earned all-tournament honors. The senior followed up her first-day 90 with an 81, the second-best round of the event. Lytle jumped eight spots to finish in a tie for second with a 171.

Aleanna Mendoza also started with a 90. Her second-day 88 left her with a 178 and in a tie for eighth overall. Caitlin McDonagh had rounds of 91 and 102 for a 193 for the final Bee score.

With a 359 Wednesday, St. Ambrose, led by third-year head coach Kevin Kwak and assistant Tim Foss, trailed Olivet Nazarene (345) by 14 strokes. But the Bees posted a closing 336 to fly past the Tigers. ONU put together a second-round 364 for a 709 total, which left them 14 shots behind SAU.

Olivet Nazarene's Lizzie Howard held off Lytle to earn medalist honors. She shot a 168 (81-87) to win by three shots.

After competing in the Augustana Viking Invite at Highland Springs in Rock Island, Ill., Saturday and Sunday, the Bees will turn their attention to the NAIA Championships. The four-day event will begin May 13 at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.
