Resilient Bees fall in double overtime in CCAC quarterfinals

Despite 24 points and 11 rebounds from Kylie Wroblewski and 20 points, including three huge 3-pointers, from Madi Epperson, St. Ambrose saw its season come to a close with a heartbreaking 89-80 double overtime loss at Indiana South Bend in a CCAC Tournament quarterfinal Tuesday night.

The Titans (25-6) advance to play No. 6 Saint Xavier in one semifinal Thursday night.

The resilient Bees didn't make it easy by clawing back time and time again Tuesday.

Trailing 62-55 with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, two Wroblewski free throws and an Epperson three following a Titan turnover, gave St. Ambrose life. Another stop led to a Wroblewski layup to tie the game at 62-62 with 1:35 left. SAU actually had a chance to win in regulation, but Wroblewski's jumper inside the final 12 seconds was off the mark.

After a Jaynee Prestegaard basket gave the Bees a 66-64 lead, Indiana South Bend took control of the first overtime, scoring eight straight points for a 72-66 advantage. The lead remained six with 25 seconds to go before Colleen Grady scored inside to trim the deficit to 74-70. After IUSB split two free throws, Epperson knocked down a long 3-pointer to get the Bees within two with 15 seconds on the clock. The Titans made just 1-of-2 at the line and Epperson forced a second overtime with another long three with two seconds left. South Bend's long jumper at the buzzer was off the mark.

St. Ambrose simply ran out of gas in the second overtime.

As they did all game, the Titans took advantage of Bee turnovers, turning three takeaways into six straight points in the middle of an 11-0 run to open the second extra session for an 87-76 lead. SAU managed just two free throws each from Wroblewski and Gabrielle Koelker over the final five minutes.

The Bees committed a season-high 29 turnovers leading to 37 points for the Titans.

Wroblewski, who had just 10 points through three quarters, finished with 24 while playing 45 minutes. She was 9-of-10 from the line and led all players with 11 rebounds.

Epperson was 6-of-11 from beyond the arc in scoring her 20 points.

Jamie Martens, who played a game-high 48 minutes, netted 10 points to go along with four assists. Grady finished with seven points and eight rebounds, and Madeline Prestegaard came off the bench to score six points.

St. Ambrose finishes the year with a 16-14 record.
