St. Ambrose unable to maintain fast start in loss to Ind.-South Bend

A fast start wasn't enough to overcome 23 turnovers as St. Ambrose saw its four-game winning streak snapped in a 78-54 home loss to No. 20 Indiana South Bend Monday night.

Those 23 turnovers led to 28 Titan points as the Bees dropped to 12-12 overall and 10-7 in the CCAC.

SAU did get off to a fast start. A Gabrielle Koelker 3-pointer just over three minutes in capped a 9-2 start. But seven first-quarter turnovers, all coming in the final 5:06 of the period, allowed Indiana South Bend (20-5, 12-5 CCAC) to take a 21-20 lead.

The turnover bug (six in the quarter) and poor shooting (4-of-16) added to the Bee struggles in the second quarter. The Titans were able to open up a 15-point lead before settling for a 45-33 lead at the half.

IUSB scored the first five points of the third to extend to a 17-point advantage before SAU rallied. Kylie Wroblewski scored the final six points of an 11-0 run that cut the deficit to 50-44 with more than three minutes remaining in the frame.

The Bees remained within striking distance, trailing by just eight at 59-51 after a Maddy Cash 3-pointer in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. But St. Ambrose managed just three more points the rest of the way, those coming on a Madeline Prestegaard jumper and a Koelker free throw, as Indiana South Bend closed the game on a 19-3 run. SAU committed its final eight turnovers and shot just 2-of-9 from the field in the fourth.

Wroblewski led St. Ambrose with 13 points and eight rebounds. Prestegaard added 11 points and eight boards. Mel Stewart netted six points and recorded seven boards, six of those coming on the offensive end. Cash finished with five points.

The Bees will next host Holy Cross Saturday.
