Bees overcome fourth-quarter deficit to outlast Eagles

In a game featuring 60 free throw attempts, St. Ambrose overcame a four-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter to post a 69-65 win over Robert Morris Saturday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena.

Trailing 56-52 with less than five minutes left, the Bees outscored the Eagles 17-9 the rest of the way.

It all started with an 8-0 run sparked by Kylie Wroblewski. The freshman scored five straight points, including a three-point play, to give SAU a 57-56 lead. Jaynee Prestegaard hit two free throws and Charlotte Flynn added one to cap the run that pushed the lead to 60-56.

From there, the Bees fought off any Eagle comeback. Prestegaard and Flynn each hit big shots to keep the lead at four, with Flynn's 3-pointer with 39 seconds to play coming after an RMU three had trimmed the margin to a single point. Flynn then hit two from the line to keep it a two-possession game with 24 seconds left.

Robert Morris (14-10, 10-7 CCAC) got back to within two points and had a chance for the tie or the win after forcing a turnover, but St. Ambrose got a big steal in the final seconds leading to two Maddy Cash free throws with 0.1 seconds left to end the scoring.

The victory, which moved SAU to 12-11 overall and 10-6 in the CCAC, came over perhaps the hottest team in the conference as Robert Morris had won four in a row, including back-to-back wins over No. 20 Indiana South Bend and No. 8 St. Francis (Ill.).

St. Ambrose did it by coming through at the line, connecting on 30-of-38 free throws, including 16-of-17 in the second half. Behind Prestegaard's 12 rebounds, the Bees also claimed a 53-37 edge on the boards.

That helped offset 22 SAU turnovers which allowed RMU to attempt 17 more field goal attempts than the Bees.

And despite shooting just 34 percent, St. Ambrose held Robert Morris to less than 29 percent.

Wroblewski finished with 17 points, seven of those coming in the final quarter, and eight rebounds. Jamie Martens scored 11 to go along with six rebounds. Flynn and Cash each had eight points. Madeline Prestegaard netted seven points and her sister Jaynee and Anna Plumer each finished with six.

SAU will host Indiana South Bend Monday at 6 p.m.
