Bees dominate boards in 88-69 win over Trojans

A 10-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters helped St. Ambrose pull away for an 88-69 win at Trinity International Saturday afternoon.

The Bees, who had led comfortably after a big second quarter, saw their led shrink to just 52-47 inside the final two minutes of the third period. But a layup from Madeline Prestegaard, a jumper from Gabrielle Koelker and a layup from Anna Plumer pushed the lead to 58-47 entering the fourth. SAU then opened the final quarter with another Prestegaard layup before her sister Jaynee Prestegaard knocked down a jumper for a 62-47 advantage. The margin was double figures the rest of the way.

St. Ambrose, now 10-11 overall and 8-6 in the conference, orginally took control of the game in the second quarter.

Over those 10 minutes, the Bees outscored the Trojans (12-10, 6-8 CCAC) 24-10 to break open what was just a 19-17 lead entering the period. Kylie Wroblewski had nine of 13 points in the quarter. Plumer scored seven of her nine while Madeline Prestegaard and Charlotte Flynn each had four points in the frame.

The other huge discrepancy in the quarter came on the boards, as St. Ambrose outrebounded Trinity Christian 16-2 in the second.

That was a trend throughout as the Bees pulled down 43 total rebounds while the Trojans finished with just 17. Ten Bees had at least three rebounds. SAU also corralled 15 offensive rebounds leading to 15 second-chance points.

Madeline Prestegaard was credited with a game-high seven rebounds while also leading all players with 21 points. Wroblewski had six boards to go along with her 13 points. Maddy Cash and Jamie Martens each had five rebounds and Plumer registered four.

Koelker came off the bench to hit 5-of-7 field goal attempts in scoring 16 points. She was also 6-of-7 from the line as St. Ambrose connected on 24-of-28 free throw attempts. Wroblewski was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line while Colleen Grady hit all four of her attempts in scoring eight points.

Trinity International was just 12-of-25 from the stripe.

Koelker led the team with six assists.

The Bees will play their third straight conference road game Wednesday night when they visit Cardinal Stritch.
