Defense locks down Jaguars in fourth quarter of 58-48 win

For more than three quarters, St. Ambrose let Governors State hang around.

But the Bees put the clamps down defensively in the final quarter to pull away for a 58-48 win Saturday afternoon in University Park, Ill.

Leading 44-43 with just under nine minutes remaining, the Bees completely shut down the Jaguars the rest of the way. Over the next 7-plus minutes, GSU was held scoreless on 0-of-8 shooting and committed six turnovers allowing SAU to piece together a decisive 10-0 run.

Offensively, St. Ambrose looked inside to Kylie Wroblewski down the stretch. The freshman scored twice to push the lead to 48-43. Wroblewski then had a steal leading to a Charlotte Flynn layup. Wroblewski then hit a jumper for a 52-43 advantage with 4:36 to go. After several empty possessions both ways, Gabrielle Koelker ended the 10-point run with two free throws to extend the lead to 54-43 with a minute left.

Governors State (5-8, 2-4 CCAC) ended its nearly eight-minute drought with a 3-pointer but Koelker responded with two more free throws before scoring twice more from the line in the closing seconds to close out the win.

St. Ambrose was able to withstand a poor shooting day thanks to its defense. The Bees shot just 35.6 percent from the floor (21-of-59) but held the Jaguars to 26.5 percent (13-of-49).

Along with the fourth quarter, the SAU defense stood out in the second. In that period, the Jaguars were 0-of-10 from the floor, scoring all nine of their points from the line. That allowed the Bees to overcome a 14-13 first-quarter deficit to take a 27-23 lead at the half.

St. Ambrose (5-6, 4-3 CCAC) built a nine-point lead in the third quarter before Governors State cut it to 41-37 entering the fourth. GSU connected on its first two field goal attempts of the final frame before the SAU defense took control.

Wroblewski paced the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Koelker also scored in double figures, finishing with 13 points. Flynn had eight, Colleen Grady scored six and Madi Epperson came off the bench to score five points.

Jamie Martens recorded nine rebounds and a team-best five assists.

The Bees will return home to host No. 19 Olivet Nazarene next Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
