Bees overpower Eagles to move to 2-0 in CCAC

The St. Ambrose defense completely suffocated Robert Morris, especially over the final three quarters, as the Bees improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 79-49 road win Saturday afternoon.

After leading just 18-17 lead after one quarter, the Bees took control.

The Eagles (2-3, 1-1 CCAC) scored just 32 points over the final three periods and shot just 22.2 percent for the game.

Nursing that early one-point lead, SAU limited RMU to 12 points in the second quarter on 2-of-12 shooting. Jaynee Prestegaard scored four points and Madi Epperson provided a 3-pointer as part of a 7-1 run to open the frame that upped the lead to 25-18.

Minutes later, Kylie Wroblewski, Olivia Cantu, Maddy Cash, Madeline Prestegaard and Charlotte Flynn each scored during a 10-0 run that gave St. Ambrose a 37-27 lead on the way to a 41-29 halftime advantage.

SAU broke things open in the third, again thanks to the defense. Robert Morris hit just 4-of-16 attempts from the floor and St. Ambrose capitalized. The Bees knocked down 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, two of those coming from Jamie Martens, in the quarter as the lead ballooned to 66-42 entering the final frame.

Even with the game decided, the Bees' defensive intensity did not waver. The Eagles scored the first five points of the fourth, but then did not score again until two free throws inside the final two minutes. Robert Morris shot just 2-of-18 over the final 10 minutes to finish at 14-of-63 for the contest.

St. Ambrose also dominated the boards, finishing with a 61-37 rebounding advantage, and hit nearly half of their 3-point attempts (10-of-21).

Wroblewski led SAU with 18 points and 15 rebounds. She scored 11 of her points in the opening quarter.

Epperson hit four 3-pointers in finishing with 12 points and Flynn scored 10 to go along with nine rebounds and five assists. Jaynee Prestegaard and Cash each had eight points, and Martens and Cantu netted seven points apiece.

The Bees (3-3) will face their second top-10 team of the season when they visit No. 9 St. Francis (Ill.) in a CCAC matchup Wednesday night.
