SAU Softball - Spring Break trip

St. Ambrose headed south for its annual Spring Break trip. The Bees are scheduled to play 12 games in Kissimmee, Fla., before wrapping up the trip with a doubleheader at Truett-McConnell in Cleveland, Ga. Update: Friday's doubleheader at Truett-McConnell has been canceled.

Thursday, March 12
St. Ambrose 5, Carlow 1
Sophia Delgado went 3-for-3 and Libby Munsterman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs as St. Ambrose defeated Carlow 5-1. The Bees pounded out 10 hits to back strong pitching performances from Ella Specht and Jane Thomas. Specht allowed just two hits and struck out three over five scoreless inning. Thomas surrendered just a single run, that coming in the seventh with the Bees already leading 5-0, over the final two frames. Madelyn Thompson got the scoring started, doubling in Munsterman in the first inning. Olivia McClintock singled in a run in the second before Munsterman's two-run single in the inning opened up a 4-0 lead. Munsterman also added an RBI double in the fourth to account for the final Bee run. Thompson collected two hits in the win.

Concordia (Neb.) 5, St. Ambrose 4
A two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth gave Concordia (Neb.) a 5-4 win over St. Ambrose to conclude the Bees' trip. SAU had taken the lead in the fifth. A sacrifice fly from Logan Frerichs tied the game at 3-3 and when Olivia Haas reached on an error allowing Madelyn Thompson to score, the Bees opened up a 4-3 lead. But that lead didn't hold up. A one-out walk was followed by the two-run shot to center to give Concordia the lead. St. Ambrose went down in order in the seventh to end the game. Erica Ralfs was charged with the loss. Ella Specht started and worked three innings before Jane Thomas pitched a scoreless frame. Thompson and Colleen Barrett each finished with two hits.

Wednesday, March 11
St. Ambrose 3, William Penn 2

Madelyn Thompson went 3-for-3 and drove in all three runs to lead St. Ambrose past William Penn 3-2. Thompson got the scoring started, driving in a pair of runs with a first inning single. After the Statesmen tied the game at 2-2, Thompson again came through, this time with a two-out single to score Libby Munsterman with what proved to be the winning run. Munsterman finished with two hits and scored twice. Kayla Stenger, Erica Ralfs and Jazzy Bowman also had hits in the win. Ella Specht earned the complete-game victory. She allowed seven hits and just one earned run in her seven innings of work.

Lawrence Tech 8, St. Ambrose 3
St. Ambrose committed six errors in an 8-3 loss to Lawrence Tech. Only two of the eight runs were earned. The Bees actually led early, first 1-0 on a Colleen Barrett RBI single in the first inning. They also led 2-1 on a Kayla Stenger run-scoring hit in the second and 3-1 on a Libby Munsterman RBI single in the fourth. But an SAU error in the bottom of the fourth ultimately allowed three unearned runs to score and the Bees never recovered. Lawrence Tech added two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to break things open. Munsterman finished with two of the six St. Ambrose hits. Jane Thomas took the loss in relief of Erica Ralfs.

Thomas More 10, St. Ambrose 0 (5 inn.)

Madelyn Thompson hit a solo home run and scored two runs to help St. Ambrose to a 3-2 win over Hannibal-LaGrange in the team's first of three games Monday. Thompson's homer leading off the bottom of the sixth provided an insurance run the Bees would need after the Trojans pushed across a run in the top of the seventh. Hannibal then loaded the bases in the seventh before Ella Specht got a ground ball to end the game. Specht went the distance, allowing seven hits and two runs. She struck out eight. She was given an early 1-0 lead in the first on Kayla Stenger's sacrifice fly that scored Libby Munsterman, who doubled earlier in the frame. Madelyn Thompson hit a home run for the second straight game as part of a 3-for-3, 3-RBI performance in the Bees' 6-4 win over Saint Francis (Ind.). Kayla Stenger also went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair. Stenger and Thompson got the scoring started in the first inning as their back-to-back two-out doubles gave St. Ambrose a fast 1-0 lead. The Cougars answered with two runs in the second in the back-and-forth affair. Thompson hit her solo shot leading off the fourth and Natalie Desmond gave SAU the lead in the inning with her steal of home. Stenger singled in Olivia McClintock in the fifth for a 4-2 lead before USF tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth. But in the top of the seventh, Stenger and Thompson had consecutive two-out RBI hits to give the Bees the lead. Erica Ralfs worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh, stranding a pair of Cougars on base. Ralfs got the win in relief of Jane Thomas. She allowed two runs over five innings.

Missouri Baptist 6, St. Ambrose 0
Missouri Baptist put an end to SAU's two-game winning streak by limiting the Bees to just two hits in a 6-0 decision. The Spartans scored two runs in each of the first, fourth and sixth innings. The Bees had their chances early, stranding at least one base runner in each of the first five innings. Olivia McClintock and Jazzy Bowman had the two St. Ambrose hits. Ella Specht took the loss.

Sunday, March 8
St. Ambrose 3, Thomas More 2

Sophia Delgado's single in the sixth inning scored Natalie Desmond with what proved to be the winning run in a 3-2 victory over Thomas More. Logan Frerichs started the sixth by drawing a walk and Desmond entered as a pinch runner. An error on Tara Lance's bunt put runners on the corners. One out later, Delgado came through with her RBI hit. That capped a Bee rally from an early 2-0 deficit on a 2-run Thomas More home run in the first inning. St. Ambrose drew even in the third. Olivia McClintock singled and stole second. Libby Munsterman reached on a bunt single and also stole second. Madelyn Thompson's groundout scored McClintock and Kayla Stenger followed with a triple to right to plate Munsterman to tie the game at 2-2. The score remained deadlocked until Delgado's big hit. Ella Specht went the distance. She allowed five hits and two runs in earning the win.

Michigan-Dearborn 8, St. Ambrose 1
Kayla Stenger doubled in Olivia McClintock, who led off the game with a base hit, for SAU's only run in an 8-1 loss to Michigan-Dearborn. The Bees managed just three more hits the rest of the way - a second-inning single from Tara Lance and back-to-back fifth-inning, two-out hits from Libby Munsterman and Stenger. UMD answered SAU's run with one of its own in the bottom of the first before taking the lead for good with a three-run second. Jane Thomas took the loss.

Saturday, March 7
Florida National 9, St. Ambrose 1 (6 inn.)

Kayla Stenger's solo home run was the Bees' lone highlight in a trip-starting 9-1 loss to Florida National in six innings. Her homer came in the bottom of the fifth. It was just one of four St. Ambrose hits. Florida National scored in each of the first three innings, opening up a 7-0 lead after a four-run third. Libby Munsterman finished 2-for-3 while Olivia McClintock had the other Bee hit. Erica Ralfs took the loss. Jane Thomas allowed just two runs over the final 3 2/3 innings.
