St. Ambrose hits 30-win mark on Senior Day

St. Ambrose got win No. 30 as the Bees held on to defeat Cardinal Stritch 3-2 in the second game of a doubleheader on Senior Day Wednesday at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex. SAU dropped the opener 5-3.

After recognizing their four seniors - MaKenna Butcher, Morgan Krieger, Briana Olson and Christina Pembrook - the Bees (30-14, 15-5 CCAC) used a three-run fourth inning to win the nightcap.

Krieger led off the fourth win a single up the middle. She came around to score when Madelyn Thompson reached on a throwing error. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third with one out, Olson singled through the right side and both runners came around to score.

After holding the Wolves scoreless through six innings, the Bees ran into trouble in the seventh as Cardinal Stritch (15-17, 7-11 CCAC) loaded the bases with two outs. After a two-run double cut the lead to 3-2, Pembrook came on in relief and got a pop up to end the game and earn her second save of the year.

Ella Specht got the victory after allowing two runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings. Jane Thomas struck out two in one scoreless inning of relief.

Colleen Barrett was the lone Bee with two hits.

One bad inning cost St. Ambrose in the first game.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to an error on a Jasmine Bowman single and an RBI hit from Olivia McClintock, SAU watched the lead slip away in the fifth. The first seven Wolves in the frame reached as Cardinal Stritch took advantage of three walks, one intentional, a hit batter and an error, to score five times.

The Bees threatened in the seventh on back-to-back one-out hits from Barrett and Pembrook, but they were only able to plate one run, thanks to a CSU throwing error, to fall 5-3.

McClintock, Barrett, Bowman and Libby Munsterman each had two hits in the setback. Pembrook was charged with the loss in her five innings of work. Specht struck out a pair in her two innings.

St. Ambrose will close CCAC play with a doubleheader at conference-leading and No. 22-ranked Olivet Nazarene next Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season with a doubleheader at Lincoln College on Saturday, Apr. 27. The CCAC Tournament begins May 2 in Whiting, Ind.
