
SAU competes in Battle for the Helmet
Behind a second-place finish from Jayden Terronez, St. Ambrose took seventh place at the Battle for the Helmet hosted by NIACC in Mason City, Iowa, Saturday.
After an opening-round bye, Terronez advanced to the championship match at 165 pounds thanks to a pair of pins. He needed 4:24 to beat his opponent in the quarterfinals, then took just 3:54 to win his semifinal bout. He dropped a decision in the title match to settle for second.
Tyler Casey also won two matches by fall. Casey lost his first match but rebounded by pinning his next two opponents in a combined 3:17 in the heavyweight bracket. In the consolation semifinals, he earned a 13-5 major decision before falling in the fifth-place match.
Three other Bees each won two matches in placing inside the top six.
Eli Gonzalez won by tech fall 16-1 in 1:45 and later used an 8-6 decision to place fifth at 141 pounds. Georgino Moraga also ended in fifth place. He earned a 7-1 decison and a 22-14 major decision in the 157-pound bracket. Reese Finch won back-to-back matches by scores of 15-4 and 11-4 before dropping the fifth-place match at 149 pounds by a 4-2 count.
Riece Graham picked up a 9-8 decision in the quarterfinals on his way to a fourth-place effort at 125 pounds. Jacob Alexander finished fourth at 133 pounds. Jack Merlo (184 pounds) and heavyweights Hector Izaguirre and Jeremiah Morris also competed for St. Ambrose.
The Bees will visit Augustana Tuesday night.
