St. Ambrose cannot overcome Governors State
The Bees forced extra points in the third set, but it was still not enough as St. Ambrose suffered a 3-0 loss to the Jaguars of Governors State yesterday afternoon at the GSU Athletics Center. SAU dropped the matches 16-25, 15-25, and 24-26 to move to 9-8 on the season.
The hitting efficiency improved immensely in the final period of action for the Bees as they finished with a .481 hitting percentage. This allowed the Bees to battle GSU all the way to the end and force extra points.
Early on, the Jaguars went on a six-point run and the Bees were never able to catch up from there despite kills from Michael Bos and Kam Dixon right after. The Bees only mustered up 13 points at that point as Governors State extended their lead even more. The Jaguars scored another four straight and then closed out the set 25-16.
St. Ambrose struggled in the second set as they ended with more errors than kills. This showed during a six-point drought from the Bees where SAU gave points to the Jaguars on attacking errors. The Bees were down as much as 4-12. Then, SAU attempted to rally, but were only able to put together small two-point stretches which would not be enough for a comeback. SAU dropped this set 15-25.
SAU turned things around in what would be the final set as they matched Governors State throughout. Both sides were tied on 12 occasions throughout. St. Ambrose notched 16 kills alone in this set.
A Ryan Hudson kills tied the Bees and Jaguars at 12-12. But, Governors State went on a small rally of their own. This time around, SAU answered back with a offensive run of their own. Kills from Bos, Pedro Zang, and Dixon put the Bees back within striking distance at 19-20.
Kainalu Ka'ahanui put the ball on the floor to tie things up at 23 all. Dixon did it again for St. Ambrose to then tie the set at 24 each. But, Governors State went on and finished the set out in extra points.
Dixon led the Bees with eight kills. Bos followed with six as Zang and Charlie Flynn added in five each.
Anthony Anderson registered 18 assists for the Bees.
Defensively, Ethan Karban earned six assists. Zang added in three.
Zang also came away with a solo block.
Next up, the Bees will travel to Judson University Tuesday evening for a matchup with the Eagles. The first serve is slated for 7 p.m. CST.
