(RV) Dordt's hitting success proves too much for Bees
(RV) Dordt showed much success in their attack game with a .500 and .650 hitting percentage in the opening sets as the Bees were swept in three straight sets tonight at Lee Lohman Arena. The Bees dropped the match 16-25, 15-25, and 22-25 to fall even at 5-5 on the season.
St. Ambrose could not pace the Defenders who went on significant runs throughout each set to put the Bees away in the first two sets. SAU rallied back in the final set, but the Bees were unable to put the Defenders away to force a fourth set.
The Bees went one-for-one with Dordt to open the first set, but then SAU's offense stalled to force themselves into a timeout. Kills by Kam Dixon and Pedro Zang helped the Bees win two consecutive points after the timeout to remain within two of the Defenders.
Dordt went on to win five of the next seven points to extend their lead to 16-11. The Bees scored once more before the Defenders captured four straight points to put the Bees away. SAU dropped the first set 25-16.
Michael Bos caught fire right out of the gate of the second set to put down a kill for the Bees. Pedro Zang followed with two kills of his own before the Defenders regained their footing. The Bees found themselves down 20-12 and without the momentum. The Defenders hit for a .650 kill percentage to close out the match at 25-15. The Bees only swung for a .217 kill percentage.
The final set, the Bees caught themselves down 8-1 and then a few points later down 12-5 before a huge offensive push by SAU. St. Ambrose rallied for four straight points after a service ace and an attack by Charlie Flynn. Dordt fought back and returned the pressure to St. Ambrose.
Another five-score run was sparked for SAU to force Dordt into a timeout. The Bees came within one score of the Defenders at 16-15, but the rest of the way Dordt made critical plays and came away with the victory as the Bees trailed closely behind. SAU dropped the third set 22-25.
Zang led the offense for SAU with 11 kills while Bos and Dixon added in six and five, respectively. Anthony Anderson assisted on 12 kills.
Libero Ethan Karban collected a team-high six digs.
