St. Ambrose gets Senior Night win over Clarke

St. Ambrose closed the regular season with a 3-2 win over Clarke on Senior Night at Lee Lohman Arena Friday.

After recognizing seniors Matt Drab, Robby Hoffman and Levi Vermeulen, the Bees rallied for a 23-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-12 win to move to 14-9 on the year.

Down 2-0, SAU battled back to claim the third and fourth sets to extend the match to a decisive fifth set.

Kills from Jaylen Clark and Vermeulen gave the Bees a fast 2-0 lead in the final set but the Pride quickly recovered with a three-point run. A few points later, a Clarke serving error broke a 4-4 tie. Hoffman followed with an ace and then a Pride hitting error gave St. Ambrose a 7-4 lead. It was a lead the Bees would never relinquish.

A kill from Scott MacGillis and an ace from Jake Snyder extended the lead to 11-7. Clarke (10-13) got to within two points on three different occasions down the stretch, but each time St. Ambrose had the response and ultimately completed the comeback.

Clark led St. Ambrose with 15 kills. Vermeulen and Zach Schmidt each had 12 and MacGillis finished with eight. Snyder led all players with 29 assists while Adam Campbell collected 16. Danny Woulfe (8) and Hoffman (7) led the team in digs.

SAU will now set its sights on next week's CCAC Tournament. The Bees will host the event Friday and Saturday, Apr. 5-6, in Lee Lohman Arena after winning the regular-season conference title. Friday's semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the championship match is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
