SAU clinches share of CCAC title with 3-0 win over Robert Morris

St. Ambrose clinched a share of the regular-season CCAC championship with a 3-0 win over Robert Morris Tuesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

The 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 victory moved the No. 10-ranked Bees to 11-7 overall and 9-1 in the conference, 2.5 games ahead of second-place Saint Xavier, a team SAU already swept during the season.

Tuesday's win over RMU also avenged the Bees' lone CCAC loss this year, a 3-1 setback on Feb. 12.

Scott MacGillis led the way with 10 kills. He had just two hitting errors. Zach Schmidt and Jake Snyder each recorded six kills. Levi Vermeulen finished with four.

Adam Campbell led all players with 26 assists and shared the team lead with four aces with Dylan Herridge. Jaylen Clark added a pair of aces as the Bees totaled 12 as a team. Robby Hoffman posted a match-high nine digs.

St. Ambrose led throughout the majority of the first and third sets but the Bees were forced to rally in the second. Robert Morris (14-13, 6-5 CCAC) led 16-11 before a kill from Snyder and a solo block from Vermeulen started the comeback. Two kills from Campbell and another from Schmidt closed the 8-3 run that tied the set at 19-19. A kill from Snyder gave SAU the lead at 22-21, and it was followed by an ace from Campbell and an Eagle hitting error for a 24-21 advantage. Two points later, another RMU hitting error gave the Bees a 2-0 lead.

A 7-0 run in the third set opened up a 22-14 lead and the Bees never looked back.

St. Ambrose will play for the outright conference title Thursday with a match at Cardinal Stritch.
