St. Ambrose rallies to defeat Cardinal Stritch

St. Ambrose fought off three match points in the fourth set before rallying to complete a 3-2 comeback victory over Cardinal Stritch Monday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees dropped the opening two sets before posting a 21-25, 21-25, 25-17, 29-27, 15-8 win to move to 9-7 overall and 7-1 in the CCAC.

After securing the third set to stay alive, SAU let a late 20-17 lead in the fourth slip away. Cardinal Stritch (5-10, 1-4 CCAC) won seven of the next nine points to take a 24-22 lead. A Zach Schmidt kill erased the first match point and then Avery Clark's ace in the corner knotted thet score at 24-24.

The teams traded points, with a kill from Scott MacGillis fighting off another match point at 27-26. Finally, at 28-27, a Jaylen Clark kill extended the match to a decisive fifth set.

There, the Bees dominated.

Two kills from Matt Drab and a pair of aces from Dylan Herridge highlighted a seven-point run that gave St. Ambrose a 9-2 lead. The Wolves got as close as 10-5 before a CSU error and a block from MacGillis and Schmidt restored a 12-5 lead. MacGillis and Avery Clark had three kills down the stretch to close out the win.

In the final set, SAU collected nine kills and had no hitting errors.

MacGillis led the way with 20 total kills and 10 digs. Jaylen Clark had 14 kills and Schmidt and Drab each finished with 10. Vermeulen added eight kills.

Jake Snyder led all players with 50 assists and also picked up eight digs. Danny Woulfe was credited with seven digs and Robby Hoffman had six. MacGillis and Herridge each had three of the team's 10 aces.

The Bees return to action Tuesday night with a conference match at Trinity Christian.
