St. Ambrose earns share of first in CCAC with win over TCC

St. Ambrose grabbed a share of the conference lead with a 3-0 win over Trinity Christian Thursday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

The 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 win moved the Bees to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the CCAC, and pulled them into a first-place tie with No. 10 Saint Xavier.

SAU led throughout much of the match, except for a slow start in the third set. Down two sets, Trinity Christian (8-5, 4-2 CCAC) jumped to a 7-3 lead in the third. But following Troll serving and hitting errors, the Bees received a kill from Jaylen Clark and a block from Zach Schmidt to pull even at 7-7. That was followed by three straight Scott MacGillis aces and St. Ambrose never trailed again.

Along with the three aces, MacGillis also led the team with 10 kills and nine digs. Schmidt had nine kills and just one hitting error in 13 swings. Levi Vermeulen had eight kills, Clark and Adam Campbell each had five and Matt Drab finished with four.

The Bees totaled 44 kills and just 14 hitting errors while the Trolls had 28 kills and 15 errors.

Campbell picked up a match-high 36 assists and Avery Clark and Robby Hoffman each recorded six digs. Danny Woulfe had four digs.

St. Ambrose returns to action Friday night competing in a pair of matches at a triangular hosted by Missouri Baptist. SAU will battle Lincoln College at 5 p.m. before facing No. 1 Missouri Baptist at 7 p.m.
