Bees miss early opportunities in loss to No. 1 Vikings

St. Ambrose let a late lead slip away in the opening set and never really recovered in a 3-0 loss (25-23, 25-14, 25-17) to No. 1 Grand View Saturday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena.

The No. 8-ranked Bees led 18-14 after a block from Zach Schmidt and Levi Vermeulen, and the margin was still 21-19 after a Scott MacGillis kill. But the Vikings (6-1) responded with four straight points and held on to claim the set 25-23.

SAU dropped the first four points and never challenged GVU in the second set. A Vermeulen kill evened the third set at 7-7, but Grand View won three points in a row as part of an 8-1 run to ultimately close out the match.

MacGillis led St. Ambrose with six kills. Schmidt finished with five and Matt Drab collected four. Jake Snyder had a team-best 17 assists. Danny Woulfe led the team with three digs.

SAU totaled 21 kills against 17 hitting errors while GVU had 35 kills and just 10 errors. Logan Havens had two of the Bees' five aces but the team was also hurt by 18 serving errors.

St. Ambrose (3-3) will return to CCAC play Tuesday at Robert Morris before returning home to host Viterbo Thursday at 7 p.m.
