
Women win, men fall at Grand View
St. Ambrose split duals at Grand View Friday with the women winning 6-1 and the men falling 5-2 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Bee women, now 7-8 this year, won five of the six singles matches, dropping just four games in the victories.
Jenna Smithmeyer and Yeva Shershan won 6-0, 6-0 decisions at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Paige Owens dropped just a single game in her 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. Hayden Evans earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2. Kate Jones won via forfeit at No. 6.
SAU also swept the three doubles matches.
Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Evans paired for a 6-1 win at the top spot. Smithmeyer and Owens won by the same score at No. 2 doubles while Shershan and Jones won by forfeit.
Sebastian Arevalo Piraquive won the only singles match for the St. Ambrose men. He outlasted his opponent 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Miguel Sampaio (No. 3) and Jaime Febres (No. 4) lost in third-set super-tiebreakers.
SAU, now 7-7 on the year, also took the doubles point. Piraquive and Gabriel Guimaray won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Sampaio and Febres also won 6-2 at No. 2. Austin Hutton and Cade Timmons fell 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
The Bee men and women return to action Saturday when the host Judson at Davenport West.
