SAU drops CCAC opener to Olivet Nazarene

The men's and women's tennis teams opened CCAC play by hosting Olivet Nazarene at the Quad-City Tennis Club in Moline, Ill., Friday afternoon.

It was a rough start to conference action as the women lost 5-2 and the men fell 6-1.

The Bee women, who are 4-8 overall and 0-1 in the CCAC, picked up a pair of singles victories. Jenna Smithmeyer was extended to a tiebreaker in the second set but she prevailed in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 4. At No. 6 singles, Paige Owens cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Chiara Aguirre Cortez, Julia Turek, Hayden Evans and Yeva Shershan each fell in straight sets.

Smithmeyer and Owens also teamed for a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles.

The St. Ambrose men dropped to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference after the 6-1 setback.

The lone SAU win came at No. 3 singles as Miguel Sampaio used a third-set super-tiebreaker in his 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-4 win. 

Esteban Rocha fell in a third-set super-breaker, losing 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 5. Jaime Febres dropped a tough 6-3, 7-5 decision at No. 4 singles. Sebastian Arevalo Piraquive, Gabriel Guimaray and Austin Hutton also lost in singles action.

The Bees also came up short in all three doubles matches.

St. Ambrose returns to action Sunday with men's and women's duals at MSOE.
