St. Ambrose takes down Simpson to open spring slate

St. Ambrose followed up a strong fall season with a good start to the spring. The Bees, who were 6-1 in the fall, picked up their seventh dual victory of the year by taking down Simpson 6-1 Friday at the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Ill.

SAU won five of the six singles matches.

The bottom four players of the lineup combined to drop just eight total games.

Jaime Febres had the easiest time, claiming a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Miguel Sampaio at No. 3 singles and Austin Hutton at No. 4 each won 6-1, 6-1. Jaxson Eisenbarth cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Gabriel Guimaray was extended to a third-set super-tiebreaker in his match at No. 2 singles before he ultimately prevailed 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.

The only singles loss came in the top spot as after dropping the first set 7-6 (7-5), Sebastian Arevalo Piraquive was forced to retire due to injury.

St. Ambrose also won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.

Sampaio and Febres won 6-1 at No. 2 Piraquive and Guimaray won 6-4 at No. 1. Hutton and Cade Timmons fell 7-6 (7-1) at No. 3 doubles.

The Bees will visit Coe next Saturday.
