Bees drop duals to Wis.-Stevens Point
St. Ambrose dropped a pair of tightly-contested duals to Wis.-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at North Scott High School. The men fell 4-3 and the women lost 5-2.
The Bee men earned the doubles point with the top team of Sebastian Arevalo Piraquive and Gabriel Guimaray winning 6-2. The No. 3 team of Esteban Rocha and Miguel Simpaio earned a 6-1 win. SAU nearly completed the doubles sweep but the No. 2 team of Gianfranco Garcia and Jaime Febres fell 7-6 (11-9).
But SAU could only claim two of the six singles matches.
Arevalo Piraquive survived a third-set super-tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 11-9 at No. 1 singles. Simpaio cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Three other matches went to the third-set breaker, but the Bees came up empty in each. Garcia lost 11-9 in the third at No. 3, Febres fell 10-4 in the third at No. 4 and Rocha came up short 10-6 in the third at No. 5.
The St. Ambrose women earned their two points in singles action. Julia Turek won 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 at No. 2 and Jenna Smithmeyer did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. Chiara Aguirre Cortez fell 6-3, 7-5 in the closest of the remaining matches.
The Bees were shutout in doubles play. Yeva Shershan and Hayden Evans lost an 8-7 (7-4) decision at No. 2. Smithmeyer and Paige Owens fell 6-4 at No. 3 and the No. 1 team of Aguirre and Turek dropped a 6-3 decision.
The tennis teams will visit Wisconsin Lutheran Friday.
