St. Ambrose men win, women fall to Dubuque

The St. Ambrose men moved to 2-0 on the season while the women dropped a heartbreaker in a dual against Dubuque Monday afternoon at North Scott High School.

The men cruised to a 6-1 win after claiming five of the six singles matches. All five victories were determined in straight sets.

The No. 5 and 6 players, Esteban Rocha and Miguel Simpaio, did not drop a game in their 6-0, 6-0 wins. Jaime Febres had little issue in his 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Sebastian Arevalo Piraquive came alive in the second set in his 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1. Gianfranco Garcia was pushed in his 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 victory at No. 3.

The lone SAU singles loss came at the No. 2 spot as Gabriel Guimaray fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.

The singles dominance came after the Bees picked up the doubles point by sweeping the three matches.

The No. 1 team of Arevalo Piraquive and Guimaray and the No. 2 team of Garcia and Febres each took 6-3 victories. Rocha and Simpaio scored a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

The doubles point proved to be the difference in the women's dual as the Bees fell to the Spartans 4-3.

All three doubles matches were competitive, but SAU was only able to claim victory at No. 3 as Hayden Evans and Kate Jones outlasted their opponents 7-5. The top team of Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Yeva Shershan fell 6-4, and the No. 2 team of Paige Owens and Jenna Smithmeyer lost 6-3.

Splitting the six singles matches wasn't enough to earn the win.

Aguirre Cortez breezed through a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. The other two wins were decided in third-set super-tiebreakers. Smithmeyer prevailed 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 at No. 5 and Audrey Pender survied 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 at No. 6.

Shershan dropped two tight sets, falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 singles. Evans and Owens dropped straight-set decisions at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively.

Both teams return to action Saturday against Wis.-Stevens Point.
