Senior Night ends with loss to Missouri Baptist

Ten SAU penalties helped spoil Senior Night as the Bees fell to Missouri Baptist 8-7 Saturday at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex. The Spartans scored four goals with a man-advantage to drop the Bees to 6-8 on the year.

It was MBU's fourth extra-man goal that came with 4:20 left in the third quarter that proved to be decisive. That goal gave the Spartans an 8-5 lead. Myles Leyden and Sam Kerr scored later in the period to trim the deficit to 8-7, but those would be the final goals of the game for either team.

Missouri Baptist (3-8) was content to run clock in the final quarter and the Bees' final penalty of the night, which came with 91 seconds remaining, allowed the Spartans to burn all but a few seconds. Gavin Flynn forced a late turnover and Elijah Gash picked up the ground ball but he turned it over as he entered the MBU zone in the final seconds.

Leyden scored three goals in the loss. His second goal of the contest tied the score at 5-5 midway through the second quarter. But the Spartans ended the half with two goals before scoring the eventual game winner in the third.

Jared Morgan, Thomas Parker and Danny Kinnerk also scored for St. Ambrose. Morgan, Austin Adams, Kinnerk, Leyden and Parker had assists.

Adam Kasper took the loss despite making six saves. Johnny Moran was credited with eight saves while allowing just one goal over the final 32 minutes in relief.

St. Ambrose will close the year next Saturday at home against Ottawa (Kan.).
