St. Ambrose rally leads to season-opening victory

Down 8-2 early in the second quarter, St. Ambrose scored 10 unanswered goals to win its season opener 14-11 at Michigan-Dearborn Friday night.

It was a Sam Kerr goal four minutes into the second quarter that sparked the Bees. His goal, coming off a Justin O'Marrah assist, trimmed the deficit to 8-3.

That was followed by goals from Danny Kinnerk, Myles Leyden and Jared Morgan to cut the margin to just two goals. Thomas Parker ended the half with back-to-back goals to tie the match.

The SAU onslaught continued in the third period.

Leyden's third goal of the game gave the Bees their first lead. Parker, Leyden and Morgan scored goals just over a minute apart to put St. Ambrose in front 12-8.

Michigan-Dearborn got one goal back late in third and scored early in the fourth to cut the SAU advantage to just 12-10. But Morgan completed his hat trick with an insurance goal and Leyden added his fifth goal of the night with just over a minute remaining to complete the scoring.

Leyden (5 goals), Parker (3) and Morgan (3) combined for 11 of the team's 14 goals. Parker also collected a pair of assists.

Kinnerk tallied two goals and four assists. Kerr had his single goal, while Chris Scislowski picked up two assists and O'Marrah added one.

Johnny Moran came on in relief of Louis Mallillin to get the win. He made 13 saves while allowing just five goals over 45-plus minutes of action.

The Bees will play their home opener next Saturday against Lourdes. That contest at St. Vincent's will begin at 1 p.m.
