McAleer claims medalist honors as Bees win Highland Classic
Dylan McAleer ran away from the field to claim medalist honors and help St. Ambrose win the 11-team Highland Classic played Friday and Saturday at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.
McAleer was the lone player to finish under par after firing back-to-back rounds of 69. After leading by just a single shot after Friday's round, his 6-under 138 total placed him six shots better than the tournament runner-up.
He was one of four Bees to finish inside the top 10. Owen Hultman, Hunter Mettille and Jacob Rude, who anchored a second SAU team, tied for seventh overall.
Hultman fired consecutive 75s and Mettille started with a 77 before bouncing back with a 73 to each reach 150. Jared Tigges was a shot back after rounds of 71 and 80 left him with a 151. Mark Schomer came in with a 156 (78-78).
St. Ambrose was able to hold off Knox in a tight two-team race.
The Bees built a four shot lead after a first-round 292, then held on with a final day 295. The 587 was six shots better than Knox's 593.
The second Bee team, led by Rude, finished sixth with a 615 total (307-308).
Rude fired a 72 Friday before slipping back with a 78 Saturday. Reid Calvert carded a pair of 76s for a 152. Tim Marcum finished with a 155 (80-75). Justin Endthoff (79-83=162) and Drew Eden (87-79=166) also competed for SAU.
