Men take runner-up, women finish fourth at Kohawk Challenge

SAU bowling competed in this past weekend's Kohawk Challenge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, hosted by Coe College. The men's field consisted of 14 teams as St. Ambrose earned the runner-up spot, while the women finished fourth in a field of 10 teams.

The men finished with 8391 pins. Mount Mercy won the event with 8775 pins, while Midland was third with 8079.

Lucas Hersrud led the men, placing second in the event, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team; he averaged 226.2 for his five games, recording 1131 pins. Other team members were Kendric Siders (1059-five games), Lucas Finley (1045-five games), Zach Greim (688-four games), Nicholas Kidd (376-two games), Keaten Bieri (364-two games), Tommy Burns Jr. (268-one game), and Tyler Close (257-one game).

The men had a pair of JV teams compete in the 14-team JV event. Men's JV2 finished in third place, with 8073, while men's JV1 finished fourth, with a total of 7968. Mount Mercy had the top-two JV teams with 8226 and 8172, respectively.

JV2 team members were Kevin Magnuson (997-five games), Brendan DeWerth (951-five games), Will Young (905-four games), Chayce Stouffer (772-four games), Eli Haack (755-four games), Matthew Edler (177-one game), Juny Almeida (175-one game) and Charlie Wooldridge (159-one game).

JV1 team members were Evan White (1008-five games), Logan Boll (1003-five games), Wyatt Honecker (983-five games), Josh Prowse (805-four games), Anthony Mastroianni (374-two games), Jaxon Robinson (374-two games), and Jay Oliva-Colobong.

Seniors Anthony Mastroianni and Brendan DeWerth made final tournament appearances at this event. Both bowlers have been members of the SAU bowling squad since their freshman season.

The women placed fourth in the 10-team event, totaling 7133 pins. Mount Mercy came out on top with 7940, while Judson was close behind, having earned the runner-up spot with 7909. Host Coe College finished third at 7725.

Senior Sammy Upham earned her first-ever All-Tournament team finish as she racked up 1029 pins for her five games. Her teammates included Marissa Bills (960-five games), Tricia Alvarado (904-five games), Delaney Walsh (856-five games), Makenna Verdon (480-three games), Lily Murphy (296-two games), Madison Holevoet and Megan Nyenhuis.

Varsity squads enjoy three weeks off before returning to the lanes in Indianapolis on Feb. 15-16 at the Hoosier Classic.
