Kerr scores 30 as Bees hang on to defeat Trojans

Coming off a season-low four-point night in a loss to Trinity Christian Wednesday, John Kerr rebounded in a big way Saturday.

The senior forward scored 30 points, which included two big 3-pointers, to help St. Ambrose get back on track with a 92-81 win over Trinity International (4-4, 1-4 CCAC) inside Lee Lohman Arena.

After watching the Trojans erase a 16-point second-half deficit to tie the game at 66-66 with seven minutes remaining, Kerr took a pass from Michael Williams and buried a three from the wing for a 69-66 lead. Warren Allen scored before TIU hit two free throws to get back to within three points. But then Ben Schols drove baseline, found Kerr, who stepped back into a corner 3-pointer that extended the lead to 74-68.

Williams, Kerr and Dylan Kaczmarek followed with big shots down the stretch before Will Spriggs hit six free throws in the final 50 seconds to close out the victory.

Kerr finished 11-of-18 from the floor, including a 4-of-7 mark from beyond the arc, for his 30 points, one off his career high of 31 set in the season opener against East-West back on Oct. 31. Kerr also grabbed seven rebounds in the win.

Schols was a perfect 7-of-7 from the line in scoring 13 points. Allen knocked down all six of his field goal attempts in scoring 12 points, a number matched by Williams. Allen and Williams also each grabbed seven boards.

Nathan Moeller scored seven of his nine points in the first half and Spriggs netted eight points.

As a team, the Bees shot better than 52 percent from the field and made 19-of-20 from the line. That helped offset an 11-of-22 performance from the Trojans from 3-point range. SAU also finished with a 42-23 edge on the boards.

SAU, now 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the CCAC, will host Cardinal Stritch Wednesday night.
