Perfect CCAC start snapped by Trolls

St. Ambrose saw its unbeaten start in conference play come to an end in an 89-68 setback to Trinity Christian Wednesday in Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees were outscored 55-37 under a barrage of 3-pointers in the second half in falling to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the CCAC.

The Trolls (4-6, 2-3 CCAC) knocked down 10 threes in the second half as part of a 16-for-31 performance from beyond the arc. And the Bees could simply not keep up.

St. Ambrose had its way early, building a 22-12 lead midway through the opening half. A Jake Conerty layup gave the Bees a 31-28 lead with two minutes remaining in the half. But TCC closed the half with a pair of 3-pointers to grab a 34-31 lead at the break, and after Warren Allen hit a jumper to open the second half, the Trolls scored the next five for a 39-33 advantage. The deficit grew to double digits minutes later.

An Allen three-point play got the Bees to within 49-42. But the Trolls scored the game's next five points and led by double figures the rest of the way.

Trinity connected on 10-of-18 3-point tries in its big second half. St. Ambrose made just 3-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Trolls also outrebounded the Bees 23-10 in the second half, which included six offensive boards.

Michael Williams led SAU with 20 points, with 16 of those coming in the first half. Allen finished with 16 points and Jake Friel netted nine. Dylan Kaczmarek scored five points in the loss.

The Bees return to action Saturday at home against Trinity International.
