Senior Night spoiled by loss to Governors State

Governors State spoiled the St. Ambrose Senior Night festivities by knocking off the Bees 86-75 Saturday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

The loss ended SAU's regular season at 16-14 overall. At 12-10 in the conference, St. Ambrose will be the seventh seed in next week's CCAC Tournament and visit Holy Cross in a quarterfinal matchup.

Despite shooting nearly 58 percent from the floor in the second half, the Bees could never overcome what was a five-point halftime deficit.

The two teams combined for 96 points in the second half. St. Ambrose got to within a single point at 35-34 on a Dylan Kaczmarek 3-pointer one minute into the second half. But Governors State (17-12, 12-10 CCAC) responded with nine straight points to rebuild a 10-point lead.

SAU twice got to within seven points inside the final nine minutes, the last time coming on a Jake Meeske to trim the margin to 62-55 with eight minutes left. The Jaguars quickly scored five in a row and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Tom Kazanecki led the Bees with 19 points. He finished 8-of-13 from the floor and connected on all three of his 3-point attempts. John Kerr scored 12 points and Michael Williams added 11. Isaiah Harvey and Trey Affolter each netted nine points.

Prior to the game, St. Ambrose recognized seniors Jake Meeske and Hunter Fettkether, along with the seniors on the cheerleading and dance teams and band.
