Late surge lifts Bees past Lakers 80-71

St. Ambrose went on a late 21-3 run, which included a 13-0 spurt, to defeat Roosevelt 80-71 in Chicago, Ill., Wednesday night.

The late rally helped the Bees overcome a 61-55 deficit with less than seven minutes remaining. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and moved SAU to 16-13 overall and 12-9 in the CCAC.

Roosevelt (7-22, 7-14) led by as many as nine points midway through the second half and held a six-point lead late. But a pair of Jake Meeske 3-pointers tied the game before Warren Allen scored inside to give St. Ambrose a 63-61 lead. A three-point play helped the Lakers regain a 64-63 edge, but it was short lived.

Tom Kazanecki threw down a dunk to give the Bees a one-point lead with just over three minutes left. After Roosevelt misfired on a three, Meeske hit another 3-pointer and was fouled. The ensuing free throw upped the advantage to 69-64 with 2:26 to go.

Michael Williams then hit a three and later converted a layup to push the lead into double figures. Dylan Kaczmarek hit two from the line to close the run and extend the lead to 76-64 with less than a minute on the clock.

Kaczmarek added four more free throws in the final 19 seconds to hold off any Laker comeback hopes.

St. Ambrose held Roosevelt to just one field goal in 10 attempts over a late six-minute stretch until the Lakers scored seven points in the final 37 seconds.

The Bees received a balanced scoring effort. Meeske led the way with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and also handed out seven assists. Williams added 19 points.

Kazanecki came off the bench to record a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Allen scored 10. Kaczmarek scored all eight of his points from the line and his 8-for-8 performance was a major reason the Bees outscored the Lakers 20-6 on free throws. John Kerr scored seven points in the win.

SAU will host Governors State Saturday in the team's regular-season finale. The Senior Night contest will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
