SAU suffers third straight loss in setback to IU-Northwest

It wasn't exactly a bad half by St. Ambrose but it looked that way in comparison to the 20 minutes put together by Indiana Northwest.

The RedHawks (16-12, 12-8 CCAC) shot 70 percent from the floor and 80 percent from beyond the arc in the second half to rally for a 98-92 win in Lee Lohman Arena Saturday afternoon.

IU-Northwest was 21-of-30 from the field and 8-of-10 on threes in that second half. It overshadowed a nearly 56-percent performance from St. Ambrose over the same period.

It also erased a nine-point halftime lead the Bees had built thanks to a late 8-0 run. Michael Williams scored the final four points of the half to close out the spurt and give SAU (15-13, 11-9 CCAC) a 42-33 lead at the break.

The margin grew to 10 points on a Tom Kazanecki jumper in the opening minutes of the second half, and the lead was nine at 56-47 on a Jake Meeske 3-pointer just over five minutes into the half.

But back-to-back threes ignited the RedHawks. They came at the start of a 14-2 run that gave IU-Northwest a 61-58 lead.

St. Ambrose stayed close, tying the game as late as 69-69 on another Meeske triple with under eight minutes left. But Indiana Northwest scored the game's next eight points, and ultimately 14 of the next 18, to take control.

SAU closed to within three points in the final minutes before the RedHawks sealed the win at the line.

Williams led the Bees with 26 points. Kazanecki finished with 16, Meeske and John Kerr each netted 12, and Dylan Kaczmarek added 10 points. Ben Schols added nine points off the bench.

St. Ambrose will next visit Roosevelt Wednesday night.
