SAU comes up empty after late run in loss at Saint Xavier

After overcoming an eight-point deficit with a 10-0 run, No. 16 St. Ambrose was outscored 6-1 over the final 90 seconds and fell at Saint Xavier 64-61 Wednesday night.

The Bees trailed throughout much of the night and found themselves staring at their largest deficit at 58-50 with just under six minutes remaining. But then they pieced together their 10-point run.

Warren Allen had a tip-in to start the spurt and then John Kerr was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three free throws. Michael Williams tied the game at 58-58 with a 3-pointer, and after a couple scoreless possessions, Williams tracked down an offensive rebound leading to a Tom Kazanecki layup and a 60-58 St. Ambrose lead with 2:31 to go.

But the Bees would manage just a single point over those final 151 seconds.

A minute after St. Ambrose took the lead, Saint Xavier (13-4, 8-2 CCAC) pulled even. Williams was fouled on SAU's next possession and split a pair of free throws to give the Bees their final lead at 61-60.

The Cougars answered with a tough baseline layup to go up 62-61. Williams had a good look at a shot to give St. Ambrose the lead but his short jumper in the lane was blocked. SAU got a defensive stop but didn't get a shot for the lead as a turnover in the final seconds led to two SXU free throws with one second left. Williams' long desperation three at the buzzer was off the mark as the Bees' fifth loss in six games dropped them to 11-7 overall and 7-3 in the conference.

Williams led three Bees in double figures with 14 points and also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Kerr and Kazanecki each netted 13 points. Jake Meeske scored nine and Dylan Kaczmarek recorded five points and seven boards.

SAU shot just 35.9 percent from the floor for the game and hit just 7-of-25 3-point tries. The Bees were 2-of-13 from beyond the arc in the second half.

St. Ambrose returns to action Saturday with a conference game at Calumet St. Joseph.
