Bees outlast Eagles in overtime 81-77

Jake Meeske hit two 3-pointers and scored nine points in overtime to lift No. 16 St. Ambrose to an 81-77 win over Judson Saturday afternoon inside Lee Lohman Arena.

Patrick Torrey broke a 66-66 tie with a baseline jumper before Meeske took over.

The senior hit a triple for a 71-66 lead and later hit two from the line to up the score to 73-68. Meeske's second three of the extra session gave the Bees a what-seemed-to-be-safe 76-68 lead with under a minute to go. But an Eagle layup and three-point play sandwiched around a Dylan Kaczmarek free throw reduced the lead to 77-73. John Kerr knocked down two free throws before Michael Williams added another for an 80-73 advantage.

Judson (2-15, 1-8 CCAC) closed to within five points before Meeske capped his 16-point day with a free throw for an 81-75 lead with less than 10 seconds left. The Eagles scored at the buzzer to account for the final score.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak and moved St. Ambrose to 11-6 overall and 7-2 in the CCAC.

The win also came after the Bees trailed by as many as nine points in the opening half and 38-32 at the half.

SAU was able to rally thanks to its work on the offensive glass. The Bees tracked down 11 offensive rebounds in the second half resulting in 12 second-chance points. Kerr (5) and Williams (4) combined for nine of those 11 offensive boards.

St. Ambrose overcame the halftime deficit to lead by as many as four points on a Williams layup with six minutes remaining in regulation. The lead was still three at 63-60 when Meeske scored inside the final minute. Judson cut it to 63-62 and after Williams converted just 1-of-2 at the line, the Eagles tied the game in the closing seconds to force overtime.

Meeske and Kerr each scored 16 points in the win. Kerr also grabbed 14 rebounds, six of those off the offensive glass, to help St. Ambrose to a 55-37 rebounding advantage. The Bees pulled down 18 offensive boards as a team.

Williams also posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Cameron Kalmas scored 10 points while Kaczmarek, Torrey and Tom Kazanecki each scored seven.

St. Ambrose will visit Saint Xavier Wednesday night.
