Six in double figures as St. Ambrose defeats Robert Morris

Six Bees scored in double figures as St. Ambrose used a big second half to get past Robert Morris 90-84 in Arlington Heights, Ill., Saturday afternoon.

Michael Williams led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and John Kerr also posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards.

Jake Meeske netted 16 points, Dylan Kaczmarek had 12, Ben Schols scored 11 and Isaiah Harvey came off the bench to drop in 10.

Those six came up big in the second half, combining for 56 of the team's 60 points, to help SAU overcome a 34-30 halftime deficit. The Bees (5-1, 2-0 CCAC) trailed by as many as 11 points in a first half that saw them shoot less than 39 percent from the floor. But they came alive after the break.

Williams and Meeske combined for the first seven points of the second half to give St. Ambrose a 37-34 lead, the team's first lead since the game's opening minutes. Robert Morris (4-1, 1-1 CCAC) regrouped and ultimately retook a 57-51 lead with 11 minutes remaining.

Then the Bees caught fire. Over the next six minutes, SAU hit 7-of-8 field goal attempts and 10-of-12 from the line, and at one point grabbed a 75-64 lead with just over five minutes remaining. RMU was able to claw back within four but the Bees hit 8-of-10 free throws over the final 1:23 to seal the win and hand the Eagles their first loss of the season.

In all, St. Ambrose connected on 21-of-26 free throws in the second half to finish 23-of-33 from the line overall.

The Bees shot 60 percent from the floor (18-of-30) in the second half to finish at 49.2 percent for the game.

Williams (15), Meeske (13) and Kerr (12) all scored double-digit points in the second half.

SAU will face a big early-season CCAC contest Tuesday when the Bees visit No. 19 St. Francis (Ill.). Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
